Twisted Spoke - Pekin, Illinois April 21st, 2019
Review and Photos by Jeremy Rickman of JKR Photography
Smaller venues always seem to bring out the best shows. Twisted Spoke in Pekin, Illinois celebrated Easter with tight group of Metal Fans when the guys from Bobaflex swung into Central Illinois along with Dark Sky Choir and locals Scat Grub Band and Audioweapon.
Audioweapon
These East Peoria, Illinois locals pride themselves on a multitude of sounds combining different genres to call their own. Vocalist Joseph Kirk, Guitarist Lane Hamilton, Bassist Conrad Sutherland, and Drummer Branden Everett opened up the show with "All That Remains" building up the crowd for the night to come. Songs "Carbon Copy Waste", "The Singularity", and "Dissected" showed the range and multiple styles that define them. It's refreshing to see an opening band with the energy level that these 4 have. Looking forward to seeing what the next level will bring.

Scat Grub Band
Fulton County, Illinois is known to grow and birth some interesting things. However Scat Grub Band is quite unique. With powerful sounds that seem to bring thoughts of driving around on back country roads with the lonesome harmonica, deep guitar solos, and flawless bass. Vocalist Scott "Scat" Grube brings the guitar and harmonica, Brothers Sean Brown on guitar and Chris Brown on Bass, Kacey Garber brings her guitar and keyboard style, and drummer Dustin "Fig" Newton make up Scat Grub Band. Their album Always Roll'n On is worth a pick up. Songs "My Silent Disease", "Time Ain't Cheap", and "American Zombies" had the house rocking and waiting for more.

Dark Sky Choir
What happens when 4 musicians from different bands get together during their off time to play classic metal together away from the usual scene? The beginning of Dark Sky Choir. Vocalist Brian Allen from California Bay Area's Vicious Rumors, and John Moyer Grammy nominated Bassist for the powerhouse band of Disturbed joined DSC in 2017 replacing Hollywood How and Joe Stable. Guitarist Ira Black of Metal Church, Lizzy Borden, and Dokken joined up this year Drummer and founding member Mike Sakowski has been in the New Jersey Metal music scene for going on four decades. As John Moyer is currently touring with Disturbed. Touring Bassist Bjorn Englen from the Los Angeles music scene as well as former bassist for Quiet Riot filled in for tonight's show.
Songs "I Am The Fire", "I See Red", "Misery", and "Static Death" rang throughout the venue the high vocals and fast beat riffs bring to mind a sound that brings back the true era of metal when Dio, Judas Priest, and Ozzy were leading the charge.

Bobaflex
Touring after their eighth album Eloquent Demons Guitarists, Vocalists, and brothers Shaun and Martin McCoy (Direct descendants of the McCoy family of Hatfield-McCoy feud fame) come from West Virginia joined by Guitarist Jake Earley, Bassist Jymmy Tolland, and Drummer Tommy Johnson wrapped up the night leaving everyone wanting more! Songs "Chemical Valley", "Never Coming Back", "I'm Glad You're Dead", and "Bury Me With My Guns" shook the small venue to it's core. Their Pink Floyd cover of "Hey You" was a personal favorite of mine. The band has always impressed me on the strong sounds, amazing vocals, and way that they can play any venue they step into. Never miss a show when they are in town and I fully recommend you do the same.
