GZA |
To close out “This Tent” on
Saturday, June 9th at the Bonnaroo Music Festival was an
iconic performance from none other than GZA (Gary Grice) performing the album
Liquid Swords with Groupo Fantasma playing his background beats live.
GZA, who gained notoriety as a founding member the legendary Staten
Island based hip hop ensemble Wu-Tang Clan, brought back the hype
that has been surrounding the LP since its release in 1995.

GZA - Gary Grice |
This
show was billed as a performance of Liquid Swords so the majority of
the set list included songs from the album. He did, however, throw
in numerous other GZA solo tracks as well as the Old Dirty Bastard
song, “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” and a cover of Wu Tang’s “Triumph.”
Overall, the GZA did a great job at executing his lyrics and kept
the crowd hyped for the duration of the show. It seemed the main
problem during his set and other hip-hop performers’ sets at
Bonnaroo was the sound quality. There were several instances where
it was impossible to decipher his vocals over the background
instruments. This seems to be a problem that puts a damper on a lot
of shows of this genre on large stages at music festivals.

GZA - The Genius |
Once known as simply, The Genius, the
GZA and the Wu-Tang Clan have been influential leaders of hip-hop for
nearly twenty years. According to Wu-Tang’s Facebook page, they
have begun work on a new LP set for release some time in 2013. They
are also scheduled to perform at Coachella 2013. GZA is also
scheduled to perform solo on Saturday, March 30th in
Manchester, NH with fellow Wu-Tang member Raekwon.
